Day 16 Update

Hi Everyone!  We are getting ready to head out to North Shore, but here is today's update.  Golda is back on her CPAP unfortunately.  She had more episodes over night and this morning that she recovered from after they rubbed her back showing the problem was her prematurity and not the saliva.  She was on 25% oxygen but was going to be lowered to room air later on.  They checked her blood counts to make sure there was no sign of infection and there wasn't.  Her surgeon decided to keep her on pedialyte at 1 ml an hour for another day to give her a chance to rest today.  Her nurse wasn't at her bedside when I called so I don't know her weight today.  I will find out later and post either tonight or tomorrow morning.

Leah is still in her isolette since her temperatures overnight were borderline.  That's okay though since she only weighs 1525 g (3 lbs. 5.79 oz.) and babies usually don't get out of the isolette until they reach 1700 g.  It's pretty impressive that they are even talking about her coming out already.  She is still eating 30 ml of fortified breast milk every three hours by bottle.

Micah is packing on the ounces.  He is now 2005 g (4 lbs. 6.72 oz.)!  He's still eating 40 ml of foritifed breast milk every three hours.

I spoke to the lactation consultant this morningShe gave me some pointers and tips to try today with both Micah and Leah!  I am going to kangaroo them for about 15 minutes, then offer the breast, then feed with a bottle, then kangaroo again.  That teaches them that the breast is a place where your tummy gets full and it smells like yummy stuff so that when they get to full term they will be more receptive to nursing.  And apparently the attemptsMicah made yesterday are all we should be expecting from him at this stage - so that's good.  We will see how it goes today!
